How to Properly Clean the Grey Off Your Fence

Nothing can compare to moving in to a newly built home. It can feel almost perfect when you enter it for the first time after the buying process. But, as with all things, time and weather will slowly take its toll on a home. If You have had your home for a few years now, then you are probably starting to see common wear and tear. Among such wear, you may start to notice that the wood of your fence has started to turn gray. While the look of your fence may not rank as the highest of your maintenance tasks, it is still a prominent feature of the exterior that can elevate and diminish the outward appeal of the property depending on how well it is taken care of. Green Haven Homes understands all the different aspects of maintaining a home, and we want to help you along the way so that your home stays just as beautiful as the day you bought it. So, in this article, we will cover some of the steps that will help keep your fence looking vibrant.

Cleaning and sealing your wood fence is actually pretty straightforward. First and foremost, you will need to have it power washed. You can rent power washing equipment for the day, start early in the morning, and then have at it. Or, you could hire a professional service to do it for you. Either way, the whole process will go smoother if you do some prep work the day before. First and foremost, will want to plan the work for a sunny day that has no rain in the forecast. Be diligent about checking the weather forecast and be on the lookout for any changes on the day you plan on taking on this project. Second, if you have anything that would get in the way of your power washing or could be damaged in the process, then you will want to move it to a safe location. If you plan DIYing it, another factor to consider is protective gear. When you power wash a fence, you may have a lot of small splinters and wood chips coming back at you. As a precaution, you will want to wear gloves, safety glasses, a long sleeve shirt, and full-length pants.

If you are wanting to do this in just one day, an early start is the key. Once you have finished power washing it, you then need to give it time to dry. If you started early in the morning, then this should not be a problem. After you have allowed it to dry, it is time to put the sealer or stain on it. When applying the substances, it is best to just follow the instructions from the manufacturer. Take note that there may be a need to put several coats on your fence, so be sure to budget your time appropriately.
