How to Remove Stains on Vinyl Floors

Vinyl tile flooring is extremely popular in many homes. This is largely due to the fact that it is inexpensive, durable, and easy to install. Vinyl tiles when taken care of properly, can last for decades. If your vinyl flooring has stubborn stains or is just downright dingy, the team here at Green Haven Homes has solutions for you.

Scuffs

If work boots and things like it have left your floors scuffed and scarred, simple rubbing alcohol can mend them. Most people have rubbing alcohol in their medicine cabinet. If you are worried about it harming your floors, test it out on an inconspicuous area, such as under the fridge. Lighter fluid and mineral spirits can also work on scuff marks. Just take a white cloth and either of the three fluids and buff the scuffs out.

Wine

If dark fruit juice or wine was forgotten about or not noticed once spilled, you can be left with lingering stains. No need to fret, however. You can take a cloth and soak it in 1-part bleach and 4- parts water. Take the cloth and lay it on the stain to work its magic. Check on the stain every 15 minutes until it is gone. In the future, you can avoid these types of stains by aiming to clean them up as soon as you notice them.

Rust

If you have rust stains from old paint or spray cans, oxalic acid or wood bleach is going to be your best friend. You can easily find it in most home improvement stores in the paint and stain section. Just dust the rust stain with the powder and place a wet cloth over top. Similarly to the previously mentioned bleach solution, allow the paste to sit until you notice the stain is gone. Then wipe clean.

Water

Water stains may be the most common affliction seen on vinyl tiles, but that does not mean they have to stick around. Using the bleach solution, soak a white cloth with it and place it over the stain. Follow up by securing a layer of plastic wrap on top and sealing it to the floor with duct tape. Leave this patch for 24 hours. The next day, remove the plastic and cloth and wipe clean.

And there you have it! With these simple solutions, you will be free to enjoy your vinyl floor without any ugly eyesores. Afterall, it would be such a shame to allow a stain to detract from the adorably vintage charm of a checkerboard floor. But do not leave just yet! Our blog page is full of useful information. Don’t just take our word for it, have a look around.
