Cheap and Easy Home Maintenance Tasks to Tackle

Buying a home that is built with care and quality materials will help your home stand the test of time, like our Green Haven Homes are. That being said, all homes require maintenance to keep them in tip top shape. And that maintenance does not have to be expensive! Here are some cheap and easy maintenance tasks that you can tackle anytime.

Musty Dishwasher

Dishwashers are a modern convenience that many people rely on. You definitely want your dishwasher to last a long time and it can with some regular care. One common problem homeowners experience with their dishwasher is when it starts to give off a foul smell. This could be because of trapped food scraps as well as grease buildup. To keep your dishwasher smelling fresh and clean, make clearing out the drain in the middle of the floor of the dishwasher a regular task. In combination with clearing the drain of debris, run the dishwasher on a hot cycle with a cup of vinegar on the top rack to keep foul smells at bay.

Leaky Faucets

Leaky faucets are a common and annoying issue that homeowners face. You don’t need an expensive plumber’s bill to remedy this though. Leaky faucets are typically due to loose connections. A new washer in combination with some plumber’s tape will most often fix this issue.

Banging Cupboards

Another common bother in homes are cabinets and cupboards that do not close softly. Not only is the noise caused by the banging of cabinets a headache, it can also cause damage to the cabinets themselves over time. Swapping your existing hinges for soft close hinges can quickly resolve this problem but if you want a less expensive option for the time being, placing cabinet bumpers on the corners of doors will absorb shock and reduce noise.

Inefficient HVAC System

Is your HVAC system running your energy bill up? The problem could lie in your filter. Ideally, you should change your HVAC system filter every three months. If you don't, dust, detritus, and debris will build up and cause your system to work less efficiently. When your system has to work harder to do its job, it begins to wear on your units and will cause them to age rapidly. Changing out your filter on a regular basis will prolong the life of your units and keep your energy bills down at the same time.

At the end of the day, taking a little time and spending a little money on maintaining things around your home will go a long way. Add these cheap and easy maintenance tasks to your to do list today!
