Most households have at least one container of baking soda laying around. And it makes sense because baking soda is cheap and has a multitude of household uses. Beyond just baking, here are some other practical ways you can use baking soda around your home.
Baking soda is a great way to keep your home smelling fresh. You can take advantage of its odor eliminating properties by placing an open box in your refrigerator door. This way if ever a food item spoils in your fridge, you can just throw it away without having to deal with lingering foul odors. You can also deodorize shoes or carpet by sprinkling baking soda over the surface and then vacuuming it up after a few minutes.
Slow or completely clogged drains can be incredibly frustrating but baking soda can help you fix clogged drains. First boil a pot of water and run that down the affected drain. Then follow that with a cup of vinegar and a sprinkling of baking soda. You will notice it bubbling as it works. Leave it for 15 minutes. While the baking soda and vinegar are at work, boil another pot of water. Once the 15 minutes are up, flush the drain with the boiling water.
Baking soda can aid in making many other regular cleaning chores easier too. For instance, it can be very helpful when cleaning your bathtub. The grit from the powder can make it much easier to scrub away soap scum and grime. Baking soda is also effective at removing stains from enamel cookware like dutch ovens and can even be helpful when scraping off burnt food on glass stovetops.
At the end of the day, baking soda is an item that would be beneficial to have on hand all the time. There are so many uses for it, and it is a fantastic gentle cleaning option.
