When temperatures drop and seasons change, getting the fresh flavors you crave can become a real challenge. While grocery stores offer imported produce, such specimens pale in comparison to summer’s bounty. There is no finer food than that available in season or at the farmer’s market unless you grow it yourself.
Growing your own fruit and vegetables is a great way to make memories and enhance your outdoor living space during the warmer months. When the weather cools, the following steps can help you create a windowsill herb garden to extend your growing season to all year.
This is a classic real estate mantra, but it also applies to finding the perfect spot for your own little corner of paradise. Look for a window that receives at least six hours of bright, beautiful light each day. Do not worry if it’s not in your kitchen; herbs transported to the other side of your house will still be fresher than those driven across state lines.
Once you have chosen a spot for your garden, it is time to invest in a few quality supplies. You will need containers with adequate drainage holes, potting soil, and the herbs themselves. While you can grow store-bought plants or try your hand at starting seeds, it is best to choose compact cultivars such as rosemary, basil, and mint.
Now, it is time to get to work. If you’re growing store-bought plants, pour potting soil into the bottom third of each container, add your plants, and then fill the pot with soil, leaving a one-inch space at the top. Generously water your new garden and place them in their new home.
Herbs are one of the few plants that need frequent trimming to stay healthy. Whenever you need a bit of seasoning for your food or beverages, snip off what you need with a pair of kitchen shears or other scissors. With fresh, homegrown herbs in hand, you can bring a little summer happiness to your table with every single bite.
