Annual Chores Every Homeowner Should Do

Many major issues that homeowners are likely to experience can be avoided or lightened with proper care and regular maintenance. At Green Haven Homes, we want to make sure that your home brings you joy and not stress. That is why we want to share a couple of items that every homeowner should address at least once a year to keep your home in tip top shape.

Clean out Your Dryer Vent

A natural byproduct of laundry is lint. Over time that lint will clog up your dryer’s vent that leads outside. Not only will this lead to your dyer having to work extra hard to do its job, it is also a major fire hazard. The solution is not time consuming and a relatively easy task. Just make sure to clean out that lint every so often. At least once a year.

Assess Your Trees

Storms or just general aging can cause trees to become compromised. A large fallen branch or an entire fallen tree can cause extensive damage to your house or property. Not to mention that it could potentially harm a family member if they are nearby when it falls. This is why it is so important to take a good look at your trees annually. If you notice that one is leaning more than it used to, this could be a sign that it is on the way out. If this is the case, be sure to call a professional to remove it sooner rather than later.

Tighten Duct Connections

If you have noticed your utility bills creeping up, it may be a good time to check the connections on your air ducts. Sometimes these connections will gradually sag. This in turn causes gaps where air can escape into your attic or crawlspace instead of traveling to the main living area. For this reason, it is a good idea to routinely check and tighten these connections.

Drain Sediment From Your Water Heater

There are natural minerals and sediment contained in water. Overtime, this sediment can accumulate at the bottom of your water heater. The danger with leaving this as-is is that it can eventually lead to corrosion. In order to keep your water heater running at its best as long as possible, simply drain your water heater partially on an annual basis.

There you have it! Hopefully you will add these items to your annual checklist so that you can avoid unnecessary headaches. For more valuable homeowner guides, be sure to check out our other blogs
