How to Stop Your Dog from Digging

If you have ever had a dog before then you know that there is always the possibility of them digging up your yard. Most dogs don’t dig but there are some that do. Your home is the one place where you can have things exactly as you want them. Usually holes aren’t exactly what you have in mind when it comes to the landscaping portion of your home. That being said, Green Haven Homes wants to help you figure out the best way to stop your dog from digging holes in your yard.

The first thing to note is that there are different reasons why dogs dig. Puppies usually dig because they have a lot of energy that they need to get out. While adult dogs will dig because they are either hot and want to cool off in the dirt or because it is instinctual. Dogs who have it in their blood are bred specifically to hunt rodents, so it is expected that they will act on those instincts. Then you have those that are scent dogs that will follow their nose wherever it may lead them, even if that means under the fence to the other side. Ones who aren’t neutered also do this, especially if there is a dog in heat around. This will help you to understand the reason why and what will be the best way to stop it.

If your dog is digging because he is trying to get to a dog in heat, then it might be best that you to get him neutered. But if your dog is digging to cool off then just bring him or her inside to the air conditioning. These are just simple solutions when addressing the root of the issue. Note, that your dog might be doing you a favor. If they are digging because of rodents then simply hire someone to come out to take care of them. You don’t want them digging near your foundation because it will cost a lot more to fix.

Last but not least, if your dog is digging because they have a lot of energy and they are bored then you’ll need to take some steps to get their energy out. Long walks for a puppy will tire them out and if you’re stuck in the house most of the time it might be good for you too. There are other things that you can do for your little pup that do not involve so much work on your part. Getting chew toys or toys that you can stick treats in. This will occupy them for hours. The other option that you have is to designate an area of the yard that they can dig in.

When it comes to your home there are so many things that you are able to do to make sure that your home is perfect. Of course, there will always be mishaps when it comes to having a puppy around the house. If you are looking for the perfect home for you and your family then just give us a call today!
