High ceilings can be visually stunning, but they come with some challenges. They make the space harder to heat, create larger areas to paint, make sounds more difficult to control, and make the space harder to light. But you can create the feeling of taller ceilings with creative use of paint, lighting, decor, and furniture.
Something as simple as opting for low but long furniture can make your ceiling seem taller. And if you have a big window with a great view, the low furniture allows the view to become the main attraction and make the space feel larger. Make the most of the outdoor landscape by keeping window treatments modest and uncomplicated.
Patterned drapes that run from ceiling to floor can draw the eye up and create a feeling of height. However, if you have too many different patterns in one space this can negate the effect and instead make the space cluttered and small. For less pattern opt for curtains with a small detail along the top. Again, this is to draw the eyes upwards.
Many have used painting techniques to change the appearance of their space. Opting for this technique is great because it is relatively inexpensive, simple, and easy to change. Painting long vertical stripes going up and down the walls seems to “stretch” the space upwards. Make sure they run up and down otherwise you will be creating the illusion of a wide space, not a tall one.
You might also consider using high gloss paint on the ceiling. The glossy sheen will almost act like a mirror of sorts and make the space feel vertically endless. This can be a very dramatic effect so make sure to look at pictures to see if it is right for your style. For a more toned-down effect, you could try a semi-gloss instead.
Lighting can be used to create many different effects, including making ceilings feel higher. This is an especially useful technique to use for basements. Choosing flush-mount ceiling lights keep the ceiling uncluttered and can make it feel farther away. This modern lighting is minimal and takes up less space.
Another option is up-lighting. This might be a lamp, sconces, or other light features that shine light only upwards or both up and down. Allowing light to bounce off the ceiling creates visual height and makes the ceiling feel airy and light.
