Avoid Pressure Washing These Areas

Many people take advantage of the warm Summer months to tend to the exterior of their home. Part of outdoor maintenance for many includes washing away spiderwebs, dirt and debris that may have accumulated over the past seasons. A job that is made infinitely easier with the help of a pressure washer. But before you get carried away with pressure washing the entirety of your home, you should be aware of a few areas that might not be able to handle the pressure. Here are a few examples.

Shingles

The high-pressure water from a pressure washing machine can be enough to degrade the shingles on your roof. It can lift or even remove older and weaker shingles. This could lead to leaking, which can lead to structural issues and mold. If you have some green algae or discoloration on your roof and you want it gone, soft washing is a better option.

Windows

The temptation to give your windows a quick rinse is understandable. Especially if you have a multi-story home. But the truth is that your windows cannot withstand the force of that water. You are likely to shatter the panes. Getting a long-handled squeegee can help make this chore easier, however, while still being gentle on your windows.

Gutters

Clearing away built-up debris from your gutters is important to maintaining the health of your home. When water is not able to flow properly away from your house, it can result in damaged siding and foundations. The problem with using a pressure washer to clear out your gutters is that doing so can cause them damage. It can force the downspout out of alignment and cause gutters to pull away from your house. Clearing gutters is a chore that is still best to perform by hand.

Ultimately, enlisting the help of a pressure washer is a great way to tackle large cleaning projects. By avoiding these areas of your home in the process you can make sure you are working smart.
